The Importance of Father’s Day and Remembering

This picture was taken at Santa Brunch in 2009. Pictured is my husband, Brian, my father, myself and his oldest granddaughter Carissa, who was almost 1 year old at the time.

My fondest memory of my father is not a significant event, but all the wisdom and life lessons he tried to teach me. My father was always not a warm and fuzzy kind of guy, he was tough and serious. He wanted more than anything to make my brother and I strong successful people. It was not until I had my own family and passed away that I realized his true wisdom.

Here are some of his most memorable lines:

“You can do anything you set your mind to.”

This was his way of getting us to set goals and work really hard. I still tell myself this to this day. Now, I am using it on my kids too.
“Education is the most important thing, no matter what, you will always have your degrees”

He was adamant that education was the key to success, and if we worked hard at school, everything would fall into place. When life took me for a few unexpected turns, I realized once again he was right. I would use my education to start a new career, a new business and essentially a new life.

“You are the one that is going to have to live with him, not me”

That was his response when I asked him If I should marry my now husband. He was right, I needed to live with my own decision. Later he told me he knew there was no right answer. He said, “If I tell you not to marry him and you do, I’m a jerk.” If I tell you to marry him and things don’t end well, it will be my fault.”

My husband and I will be celebrating our 14th wedding anniversary next month.

“You won’t appreciate and miss me until I am gone.”

He was right, it was not until he passed in 2012, that I came to realize that he was right about so many things and I how much I looked to him for advice, guidance and wisdom.

Even after five and a half years, I still miss him dearly and think about him daily. Thank you Dad for everything.

With Love,

Dina Zubi Hurnevich
