Boy, just another thing we have to worry about as we get older…our body water content decreases, which puts us at risk for dehydration, and the consequences of this become far more serious.

My hospital friends at St Joseph’s Mercy near Bloomfield Hills shared with me that lack of hydration has been associated with increased mortality rates among hospitalized older adults and have a dramatic effect on the need for emergency hospitalization and the cursed increase of repeated and or re-admissions.

Dehydration can also effect various morbidities, such as reduced cognition or acute confusion, falling or constipation.

Why as we age are we more susceptible to dehydration?
