Protect Your Elderly Loved ones from Scams

Scammers will continuously update methodologies, technology and delivery of scams. These result in some of the more recent scams to watch out for in 2023 such as the such as the QR Code scheme which show new ways to use technology.

And like everyone else scammers have embraced technology.

In-home Care can help provide support to your elderly loved ones and families by helping our clients stay safe and providing Integrated Wellness Care which supports everyday living along with healthcare services.

Ways that In-Home Health Services Help Protect Your Loved Ones from Fraudsters

Elderly loved ones are often alone or isolated from their families, even if they live nearby. They will spend most of their day on their own. Even some isolation makes it easy for fraudsters to call, email and text your elderly loved ones and catch them off guard. This creates an environment where your elderly loved one will be willing to speak with a fraudster.

In-Home care provides many benefits for your elderly loved one who is aging at home. Here are some benefits that we often overlook when it comes to In-Home Care.

  • Your In-Home Care professional along with friends and family can help your elderly loved one navigate the challenges presented by individuals with the intent to deceive or defraud. Fraudsters will often appear through benign everyday interactions on the phone and through technology.
  • In-Home Care provides companionship and company for your elderly loved one. In-Home Care comes with a person who cares. You can rely on your family member having their care needs met and having someone to talk with in the process of going about their day.
  • Alliance In-Home Care services supports for your elderly loved one and family care givers. Our In-Home Care professionals will often notice changes in habits and the health of your elderly loved ones that may go overlooked by family and family caregivers. This can be important fro any changes needed in care.

Alliance Senior Care In-Home Health Care Services provides our clients with a partnership for combining in-person at home healthcare services provided by a compassionate healthcare professional.

  • Check washing scam

Though other payment modes are replacing them, checks are still used often enough for scammers to exploit. One trick is “check washing,” in which crooks steal checks from mailboxes and bathe them in household chemicals to erase the original name and dollar amount, leaving blank spaces they can fill in. It’s possible to convert a $25 check to one for thousands of dollars.

Ways to Stay Safe:

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service recommends depositing your outgoing mail in blue collection boxes before the day’s last pickup, so it doesn’t sit for as long. Avoid leaving mail in your own mailbox overnight, and if you are going to be away, have your mail held by the post office or picked up by a friend or neighbor.

  • Free-gift QR code scam

This is a variation on a basic QR code scam that the FBI warned about: Scammers put fake codes over real ones to exploit the convenience of the barcodes people scan into their phones to see restaurant menus or make payments. Experian’s Bruemmer says scammers may call and say they’re going to send a QR code to your phone, so you can receive a free $100 gift card. In reality, the QR code may take you to a malicious website or put malware on your phone.

Ways to stay safe:

If you receive a QR code out of the blue, whether it is from a text or email, contact the person or company that supposedly sent it, to make sure it is for real.

If you call a company who sent it be sure to look up their phone number and do not se any contact details in a text or email that was sent to you.
